• Performs professional nursing duties for the care of inpatients (ambulatory care outpatients, emergency cases, and patients in specialty clinics).
• Carries out treatments and emergency or other procedures required; administers medications; observes and documents patients' conditions, changes and reactions to medications and medical treatment.
• Provides counseling and teaching to patients and families or surrogates on preventive, curative and rehabilitative measures involved in health care.
• Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in nursing through continuing education staff meetings, workshops and serving on nursing committees.
• Maintains health records by documenting observations, nursing interventions and therapeutic measures administered.

AND Experience Basic Requirements for the GS-09 (or equivalent) Grade Level In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: GS-09: Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; OR At least one full year of professional nursing (experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Nursing Experience Defined GS-09: providing professional nursing care principles, practices and procedures required to assess needs of patients; knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms which are not always apparent and to react promptly in emergency situations including the implementation of life saving procedures; providing counseling, guidance and health instruction to patients; and identifying disease entities in order to recognize complications and therapeutic interventions required.
