We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Dispatcher/Monitor to join our team on a part-time basis.

About the Dispatcher/Monitor Role

The Dispatcher/Monitor is a critical position that involves dispatching operations and maintenance personnel and units in response to customer telephone calls, Authority needs, emergency alarms, or severe weather conditions. This role requires a unique blend of technical knowledge, customer service skills, and the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides exceptional customer service by receiving customer complaints and billing questions and providing information about sewer or water system problems.
  • Determines the extent of problems and dispatches appropriate Service Authority personnel, transmitting daily work orders to relevant department personnel.
  • Prepares work orders for water and sewer-related problems, provides history of problems to appropriate personnel, and documents completion of jobs after inspection.
  • Monitors the status and systems of all Service Authority facilities, including tanks, wells, pump stations, security systems, printers, and intercoms.
  • Utilizes utility billing software to search for meter numbers, meter locations, and other information for maintenance or service aids.
  • Contacts local Police and Fire Departments via email and telephone, and the Environmental Lab Department as needed.
  • Monitors the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, acknowledging sewer or water system alarms and notifying proper authorities of customers who have had their water service discontinued due to nonpayment.
  • Enters completed Operations and Maintenance (O&M) work orders into the computer software program on a routine basis.
  • Receives messages and problem calls and dispatches to on-call personnel, providing administrative support to complete work orders, process tickets, and prepare reports or other correspondence.

Essential Skills and Experience

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service, operation of communications systems, Hansen, PMC, Miss Utility, and security systems, SCADA, two-way radio, and telephone procedures.
  • Understanding of water and sewer systems and the geography of Prince William County.
  • Excellent English usage, spelling, and grammar skills.
  • Proficiency in computer software and equipment related to the assignment.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public under trying conditions, speak clearly and distinctly, acquire and relay information accurately, and understand and follow directions.
  • At least one year of customer relations experience.
  • High school diploma or GED, or a combination of education and experience as described above.

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Technical knowledge of water and sewer systems, SCADA, and related software.
  • Customer service orientation and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
