About the Role: Staff Data Scientist - Search Retrieval

We are seeking an experienced Staff Data Scientist to join our team, specializing in Search Retrieval and Machine Learning. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for improving and optimizing our search algorithms, driving innovation and performance in how customers interact with our platform. The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of data science, machine learning, and search retrieval methodologies to develop and implement robust solutions.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Staff Data Scientist, you will be a team lead, owning one of the team's fundamental workstreams, assisting in driving technical direction for the team, and guiding other team members to achieve product and technical goals. On a daily basis, you will:

• Explore data and formulate problem statements
• Develop and deploy predictive models, tracking them in production
• Guide the team in implementing solutions and collaborating with cross-functional teams
• Evangelize your team's work and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field

Key Responsibilities

Some of the key responsibilities of this role include:

• Collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance and optimize search algorithms for improved accuracy, relevance, and overall user experience
• Experimenting with Proof of Concept Machine Learning model improvements, scaling them to production, and running iterative A/B experiments to enhance our matching technology
• Defining and clarifying project objectives, deliverables, and success metrics in collaboration with cross-functional teams
• Acting as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, facilitating effective communication and understanding of project goals and outcomes
• Mentoring and developing other software engineers, data scientists, and Machine Learning Engineers across teams
• Breaking down large Machine Learning projects into components that deliver incremental business value and guiding the team through implementing them
• Representing Indeed at major Machine Learning conferences, such as Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), and International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR)

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field
• 3+ years of industry experience as an AI Engineer, Data Scientist, or Machine Learning Engineer
• Prior success in deploying impactful Machine Learning solutions to large-scale production systems, while collaborating across teams
• A solid understanding of data systems and algorithms
• A sense of ownership and accountability as a key contributor in the technical and product domains
• Knowledge and hands-on experience working with Deep Learning Libraries (such as Torch, Tensorflow, etc.)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and business audiences

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

• Experience working with large datasets and distributed computing systems
• Knowledge of natural language processing and information retrieval techniques
• Experience with cloud-based technologies, such as AWS or Google Cloud
• Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or C++

Salary Range Transparency
