Position Overview

The Guest Special Education Teaching Assistant position is an on-call, as-needed role that requires flexibility and reliability. Under the guidance of the classroom teacher, you will assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs and at-risk students. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in special education and make a meaningful difference in the lives of students who require additional support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher in planning, preparing, and delivering instructional activities that cater to the diverse needs of students with special needs
  • Provide individualized support to students, including academic assistance, behavioral guidance, and emotional support
  • Help create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes social interaction, respect, and empathy among students
  • Assist with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and ensure that students receive the support and accommodations they require
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to develop and implement strategies that meet the unique needs of each student
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, behavior, and attendance, and communicate effectively with parents and guardians
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills in special education and stay up-to-date with best practices

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must meet one of the following licensure requirements:

  • Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
  • Current Illinois Substitute Teaching License
  • Current Illinois Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed-Paraprofessional Educator

If you do not already hold a Teaching/Substitute License, you may be eligible for a Paraprofessional Educator license if you have:

  • An Associate's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
  • 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited institution
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, plus a score of 480 or higher on the ETS Parapro test
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, plus a score of 4 or higher on the ACT WorkKeys Applied Math and Workplace Documents

Alternatively, you may be eligible for a Current Illinois Short Term Approval (STA) - Paraprofessional if you meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum age of 19 years old
  • Application in ELIS ($50 application fee)
  • Proof of high school graduation (copy of diploma, transcript, or GED)

Preferred Qualifications

While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Experience working with special needs children or in a related field
  • Ability and willingness to work at least 3 days per week
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and build strong relationships with students, teachers, and parents
  • Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the changing needs of students and the classroom environment
