The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), a world-renowned institution dedicated to the arts, is seeking an exceptional professional to join its team as an Assistant Director for the Community Arts Partnership (CAP) program. Located in Los Angeles County, CA, this role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact in arts education and community engagement.

The Community Arts Partnership (CAP) is a vital program within CalArts, dedicated to providing high-quality arts education to K-12 students across Los Angeles County. CAP's mission is to empower youth through arts education, fostering creativity, and promoting social justice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Administration (35%):
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director, school administrators, and classroom teachers to implement high-quality arts programs.
    • Develop and lead professional development training programs for student instructors, lead instructors, and classroom teachers.
    • Oversee logistics, curriculum development, and instructor supervision.
    • Conduct site visits, evaluate program quality, and maintain program records.
  • Program Development (25%):
    • Brainstorm and propose innovative programming to enhance CAP's mission.
    • Develop study guides, instructor handbooks, and educational materials.
    • Participate in national peer group meetings, conferences, and professional development trainings.
  • Instructor Supervision & Training (25%):
    • Provide pedagogical training for classroom teachers and CalArts student instructors.
    • Supervise and evaluate student instructor performance.
    • Oversee lesson plan content, structure, and classroom management.
  • Community Engagement (15%):
    • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with schoolteachers, administrators, and community leaders.
    • Represent CalArts and CAP in public, including partner organizations and prospective students.
    • Participate in community building and engagement with program partners.

Essential Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • A Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience in working with classroom teachers, arts integration programs, and coordinating arts education programs for youth.
  • Experience teaching at the K-12 level and supervising personnel.
  • Knowledge of current California state educational standards, best practices in teaching, and curriculum development.
  • Excellent project management, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a high level of initiative and discretion.
  • Advanced familiarity with Macs, Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, Adobe Suite, and video editing software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience at an institution of higher education.
  • Spanish language proficiency (written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of current research associated with arts education and K-12 curricula.

Work Environment

This role is based in Los Angeles County, CA, with some remote work flexibility. You can expect:

  • Exposure to office equipment, toner, and other materials.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, with occasional standing and walking.
  • Occasional extended hours, including evenings and Saturdays, during the academic year.
