Job Summary

As a Police Officer with the City of Mesquite, you will be responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks in support of law enforcement and crime prevention functions. This includes conducting investigations, making arrests, and enforcing traffic and parking laws and ordinances. You will also be responsible for interacting with citizens, responding to emergency calls, and participating in community policing initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct investigations and gather evidence to solve crimes

  • Make arrests and enforce traffic and parking laws and ordinances
  • Respond to emergency calls and provide assistance to citizens
  • Interact with citizens and provide information and support
  • Participate in community policing initiatives and events
  • Conduct surveillance and gather intelligence to prevent and investigate crimes
  • Participate in training and professional development to maintain proficiency in law enforcement techniques and procedures
  • Work collaboratively with other law enforcement agencies and community organizations to achieve common goals

Essential Qualifications

* Must be at least 21 years of age (or 55 years of age for lateral candidates)

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have successfully completed 30 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university (or have completed a minimum of 2 years of patrol and/or investigative experience as a full-time commissioned police officer, or have completed a minimum of 2 years of active military duty with an honorable discharge, or have completed a minimum of 18 months of full-time employment with the City of Mesquite)
  • Must have a valid Class C Texas driver's license
  • Must be able to pass a physical ability and medical examination, including drug testing
  • Must be able to obtain certification as a Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TECOLE)

Preferred Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in a related field (such as criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field)

  • Previous experience as a police officer or in a related field
  • Certification in a specialized area of law enforcement (such as crisis negotiation, SWAT, or K-9)
  • Fluency in a second language
