The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is committed to advancing the health and well-being of California’s diverse communities. The Research Scientist I (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will coordinate data evaluation, curation, and extraction efforts while designing and conducting scientific research to improve public health. This role also involves acting as a subject matter expert for data strategy and collaborating with external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the evaluation, curation, and extraction of data for transformation and loading (ETL) efforts
  • Identify or develop models and analytics services to ensure optimal use of public health data for CDPH programs and Centers
  • Plan and organize research studies of a scientific scope and complexity
  • Make independent complex decisions in the vital statistics field
  • Develop and adapt methods, techniques, and procedures to carry out assignments
  • Act as a subject matter expert for data strategy at CDPH, working with external government and community stakeholders
  • Design and conduct scientific research to evaluate, protect, and improve public health through specialized reporting of scientific projects and investigation
  • Coordinate public data dissemination and education using scientific methods of study, investigation, analysis, and interpreting results to achieve protection of public health
  • Travel may be required, including overnight stays

Skills

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field is required to meet the minimum qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree in a relevant field is required to meet the minimum qualifications
  • Experience in epidemiology or biostatistics
  • Ability to coordinate the evaluation, curation, and extraction of data for transformation and loading (ETL)
  • Experience in identifying or developing models and analytics services
  • Ability to plan and organize research studies of a scientific scope and complexity
  • Ability to make independent complex decisions in the vital statistics field
  • Experience in developing and adapting methods, techniques, and procedures to carry out assignments
  • Ability to act as a subject matter expert for data strategy
  • Experience working with external government and community stakeholders
  • Ability to design and conduct scientific research to evaluate, protect, and improve public health
  • Experience in specialized reporting of scientific projects and investigation
  • Ability to coordinate public data dissemination and education using scientific methods of study, investigation, analysis, and interpreting results
  • Willingness to travel up to 5%, including overnight stays

Benefits

  • Educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay
  • Educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay
