Hybrid Work Options Available The Fisheries Biologist I, under the direction of the Fisheries Enhancement Coordinator and the Fisheries Assessment Biologist, will assist in a biologically-based program necessary for the proper management and regulation of the Sault Tribe's Natural Resources Fisheries. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Assists with the collection and analysis of pertinent biological information from fish populations.
  • Assists with statistical procedures and/or computer models where appropriate to evaluate population status and trends of important fish populations.
  • Assists in creating and maintaining complete computer databases on all biological information collected or analyzed.
  • Assists with developing information to advise the Tribe's Conservation Committee, Administration, and Board of Directors.
  • Operates program vehicles and vessels, as well as sampling gear and related equipment.
  • Assists in preparing oral and written reports for the appropriate tribal or non-tribal entity as necessary.
  • Assist in the development and carrying out of biological experiments.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS: Frequent contact with tribal fishers and tribal members interested in natural resource activities. Frequent contact with other Sault Tribe Natural Resource Department staff. Occasional contact with natural resource departments in other Michigan tribes, the State of Michigan, and Federal Agencies. Occasional contact with the other Sault Tribe departments and administration. Occasional contact with contractors and vendors regarding supplies and equipment needs. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Office and field work required, frequent extended days and weekends during field seasons required. Occasional heavy lifting and maneuvering of heavy objects are required. Other physical activities such as walking over wet, rough, uneven surfaces, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities required. Regular work on research vessels on the Great Lakes. Temperatures and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Occasional overnight travel required. Frequent use of pressurized equipment, knives, and other sampling equipment. Confidentiality mandated. REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences or five years of demonstrated ability in related work experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Experience: Minimum 2 year's experience and knowledge of field data collection and identification methods for fish, wildlife, and plants preferred. Experience or strong interest in fish management/culture methodology preferred. Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe's Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Mechanical experience preferred. Must be willing and capable of working outdoors, various schedules, and traveling overnight. Must be able to work creatively and independently. Must strive for accuracy and precision in data collection. Responsible for proper collection and processing of field/hatchery data for fish. Responsible for accurate and timely data entry onto computer formats including but not limited to Excel and Access. Responsible for establishing and maintaining computer and paper files. Accountable for coordinating sampling appointments with tribal members as appropriate. Responsible for proper handling and maintenance of equipment and sampling gear. Native American preferred.
