Museum of Idaho Director of Development

Remote Full-time Live

Director of Development Full-time, salaried, benefits-eligible The Museum of Idaho (MOI) is seeking an experienced Director of Development to lead and grow fundraising efforts supporting the museum’s mission, growth, and long-term sustainability. MOI is a regional nexus for humanities and science learning with a focus on accessibility and mission-driven community outreach. The museum presents internationally acclaimed exhibits, a wide array of educational programs, and important historical, archival, and archaeological collections. MOI is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a $2.5M annual operating budget and a growing endowment. About the position: The Director of Development is a leadership position responsible for setting and working toward long-term fundraising strategy, strengthening fundraising capacity, and building deep relationships with a wide variety of individual donors, corporate sponsors, and granting organizations. The Director of Development is a key staff member reporting directly to the Executive Director and working closely with other staff leaders and board trustees to ensure MOI has the philanthropic resources to meet ambitious goals to serve our community. This role will build on a positive trend for the museum, which has enjoyed increasing fundraising success for the past several years, thanks in part to its excellent reputation in Idaho and the broader museum world. The successful candidate will hire and lead a cohesive development team with complementary skillsets to their own. The candidate will also be (or become) an active member of the community in Idaho Falls — a scenic small city with vibrant cultural amenities and easy access to world-class outdoor recreation spaces. The role:

  • What you’ll do:
  • Design and execute annual and multi-year fundraising strategies and goals in accordance with MOI’s strategic vision
  • Cultivate and steward meaningful relationships with current and prospective giving partners
  • Solicit major gifts that match donor interests through in-person asks, proposals, and strategic outreach
  • Oversee attentive donor stewardship, recognition, and reporting processes
  • Work closely with the executive team, pertinent staff, board members, and volunteers
  • What your team will do:
  • Collaborate to seek support from individual donors, museum members, corporate sponsors, grantors, and others
  • Coordinate with programming staff to match mission-driven projects with funding sources
  • Cultivate and steward meaningful relationships with current and prospective giving partners
  • Expand the museum’s recurring giving program and planned/legacy giving opportunities
  • Actively seek new giving partners
  • Optimize the use of the CRM and other fundraising tools
  • Research and analyze giving trends and best practices
  • Prepare regular fundraising reports to monitor progress toward strategic goals

Required qualifications:

  • 3+ years of recent professional experience working as a Director of Development or on a dedicated development team, preferably for a nonprofit (marketing experience alone is not sufficient)
  • 2+ years of experience managing others
  • 1+ year of experience using a donor database/CRM to track and analyze constituent data
  • Experience making successful asks for various types of gifts, including major and minor gifts, recurring gifts, planned gifts, etc.
  • Experience working with a team to execute a strategic fund development plan, including multiple sources of revenue, such as individual donors, corporate sponsors, and public and private grantors
  • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, follow-through, proactivity, and attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred)

Compensation, schedule, and work conditions:

  • Starting salary: $92,000 – 105,000
  • Benefits include:
  • Medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance paid by employer
  • Health Savings Account with employer match (depending on medical plan choice)
  • Simple IRA with employer match
  • Generous paid time off (PTO) plan
  • Schedule: 40 hour/week schedule, based around Mon-Fri 9-5, but with some flexibility. Some evening and weekend work also expected.
  • Work is primarily based out of a physical office in the Museum of Idaho, with options for regular remote work
  • Relocation to the Idaho Falls area, if necessary, will be the sole responsibility of the candidate
  • Some regional and international travel expected
  • Desired start date: no later than April 2026

To apply:

  • Send a resume, cover letter, and 2-3 professional references to Executive Director Jeff Carr at [email protected].
  • This position will remain open until filled.
