Posting Title Part-Time Radiation Safety Officer Overview The primary function of this position will be to serve as the University Radiation Safety Officer. Responsible for developing, implementing and managing all aspects of the University Radiation Safety Program and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and standards and to ensure the safety of users of radioactive materials, x-ray producing and non-ionizing radiation devices. Accountable for applicable Radioactive Materials License/s as authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Technical expert on campus for radiological research projects and develop and lead the University Radiation Safety Committee. Works under the supervision of the Sr, Director of Environmental Health and Safety/Risk Management. The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $80/hr.

Responsibilities

  • Management of the Radiation Safety Program for the University. Major duties in this area include comprehensive radiological surveillance of University facilities; radioactive waste disposal; personnel monitoring; maintenance of a comprehensive radionuclide inventory; monitoring of unsealed and sealed sources, X- ray equipment, and lasers; calibration of radiation monitoring instruments; receipt, monitoring and delivery of incoming shipments of radioactive materials; packaging and shipment of radionuclide's to off campus locations; maintenance of all appropriate records for the program; managing the university's laser safety program.
  • Determine compliance with rules, regulations, and license conditions; keeps abreast of current regulatory requirements; and amend and renew University licenses as required. Maintain a response capability adequate to mitigate the effects of accidents involving radiation sources and radioactive materials. Attend administrative meetings and conferences dealing with the operations of radiation safety.
  • Facilitate the Radiation Safety Committee's review of proposed uses of radiation sources and radioactive materials under licenses issued to the University4. Develop, implement, and conduct orientation and training programs for graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and staff regarding proper procedures and other safety considerations relating to the use of radiation and/or radioactive materials.
  • On-Call response, hazardous materials response, and response to emergency events.
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor. Acquire and maintain training appropriate to job role. Use of motor vehicles, tools, and equipment as required.
  • Work collaboratively with leadership, co-workers, students and faculty/staff to foster an environment that is safe, respectful, and inclusive.
  • Maintain and update EHS RM website in collaboration with Divisional website.
  • Establish strong and positive management relationships with key academic chairs and deans and staff managers, directors and vice presidents.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's Degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, public health, environmental health or other relevant science related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressive work experience which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job-related certifications, training, education, and/or experience.
  • Possession of a current and valid U.S. driver's license appropriate to the type of university vehicle and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record (MVR) as stipulated in the Vehicle Guidelines and Procedures Manual administered through the Office of Business Services preferred.
  • Annual clearance of MVR check through the Office of Business Services.
  • Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, measurement techniques, exposure control methods and applying regulations.
  • Completion of at least 40 hours of training and experience in the safe handling of radioactive materials and in the characteristics of ionizing radiation, units of radiation dose and quantities, radiation detection instrumentation, and biological hazards of exposure to radiation appropriate to the type and forms of byproduct material to be used.
  • Must possess the ability and qualifications to hold requisite NRC licenses on behalf of the University if necessary.
  • Working knowledge of recommendations established by consensus standard-setting organizations, such as NCRP, ICRP, ICRU, ANSI and others.
  • Thorough understanding of NRC, DOT, OSHA, EPA and other safety regulations applicable to a research university setting.
  • The ability to drive a campus vehicle.
  • Familiarity with computers and use of word processing software, spreadsheets, webpage maintenance and databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, be productive, analyze problems, and have superior judgment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for responding to queries, generating reports and recommendations, and giving presentations.
