Director, Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Governance

Position Purpose Executes the AI governance framework, ensuring that established policies and strategies are effectively implemented across the organization.

• Executes comprehensive AI governance framework that aligns with organizational goals, ethical principles, and regulatory requirements
• Translates high‑level AI‑specific policies and strategies into actionable processes, guidelines, and operational workflows within the organization. Addresses data governance, bias mitigation, transparency, accountability, and risk management
• Monitors and conducts AI risk assessments to identify potential ethical, legal, and societal risks associated with AI applications. Reports on findings to senior leadership and the VP of AI Governance.
• Implements the AI ethics guidelines for the organization including for models developed by the organization or third parties on which the organization relies
• Performs project‑level risk analysis to determine success criteria or identify risks for model development outcomes
• Develops and implements AI training and awareness programs for employees and stakeholders on AI governance principles, ethical considerations, and best practices
• Manages a team of AI professionals to ensure consistent application of AI governance standards across the organization
• Advocates for the understanding of human reactions and behaviors, for those working with AI, adjacent to AI, or receiving an output from AI as part of overall AI ethics
• Promotes AI literacy across the organization, fostering a shared understanding of AI’s impact and facilitating smooth adoption
• Monitors and evaluates the performance and impact of AI systems on the organization and its stakeholders
• Establishes metrics and benchmarks to assess the effectiveness of AI governance controls and identify areas for improvement
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Complies with all policies and standards

Education / Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Law, or Healthcare Management required
• 7+ years leadership experience in related field
• Experience with and deep understanding of AI governance frameworks, ethical principles, and best practices required
• Strong knowledge of the healthcare industry, including relevant regulations (e.g., HIPAA) and ethical considerations required
• Proven ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with AI technologies required

Preferred Experience

• Experience with developing and implementing AI compliance programs preferred
• Experience with AI model development and deployment preferred
• Knowledge of data governance frameworks and best practices preferred

This position is 100% remote within the United States with 10% travel required for annual meetings. Pay Range: $148,000.00 – $274,200.00 per year Centene offers a comprehensive benefits package including competitive pay, health insurance, 401(k) and stock purchase plans, tuition reimbursement, paid time off plus holidays, and a flexible approach to work with remote, hybrid, field or office work schedules. Actual pay will be adjusted based on an individual’s skills, experience, education, and other job‑related factors permitted by law, including full‑time or part‑time status. Total compensation may also include additional forms of incentives. Benefits may be subject to program eligibility.
