Applied Genomics Specialist (Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics), ASEAN
Basic Function and Scope of the Position:
The Applied Genomics Specialist (Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics) will be responsible in supporting the potential channel sales opportunities by facilitating translation of expertise and product knowledge into competitive and compelling sales strategies. The goal is to support the promotion of rapid adoption of lllumina technology. The Specialist will support in developing practical solutions and facilitate to build a community of satisfied customers by partnering with sales channel partners and marketing in both pre- and post-sales activities.
This role will focus on supporting lllumina's Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, and Agrigenomics business in ASEAN to facilitate adoption of lllumina technology across Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics applications and others where opportunity presents. Occasional business trip may be required to support operational needs.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Apply the relevant local expertise for Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics applications and communicate customers’ needs to regional management, global product management, marketing and market development
- Facilitate communicating a broad knowledge of the market environment including: current and possible future market trends, practices and information affecting the business; industry trends; competition and competitive environment; marketplace strategies and tactics
- Communicate to customers on several aspects where necessary such as end-to-end workflows, study design, possible solutions, product positioning and competitor comparisons.
- Support channel sales teams to impart deep domain knowledge, including discussion of relevant publications and supporting literature with key customers.
- Have a deep knowledge of Illumina’s products and the value to customers
- Provide engaging presentations to facilitate promotion of market interest in lllumina technologies
- Demonstrate the ability being a valuable addition to discussions and conference programs
- Attend relevant trade shows and conferences
- In collaboration with channel sales and marketing teams, coordinate and execute strategic plans for winning new business for the purpose of expanding market share, and building upon existing programs.
- Support the identification and interaction with key customer types such as Public Health and Infectious Disease Molecular Testing Laboratories, Academic Researchers, Plant and Animal Testing Service Providers, Professional Societies, to facilitate the introduction of Illumina products into new customer groups
- Support channel sales management to approach the district market with new assays and technologies or customers to promote solutions within target customer base.
- Regularly communicate updates to management of in-district, trends and any issues related to their specific product line performance, competitor activities, or other issues emerging in assigned territory.
- Facilitate the development of localized sales tools and appropriate training for the channel sales teams and to support Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics business.
- Spend majority working time in the field, connect customers with channel partners to maintain positive relationships, support to execute strategies, tactics and to promote key solutions related to Illumina’s products.
- Identify and interact with key opinion leaders and key customers in the Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics to communicate possible solutions and facilitate the introduction of Illumina products into new customer groups
- Assist, as time permits, with other business development activities
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
- Liaison with customer and Illumina for custom and/or customized product development project (e.g. custom genotyping arrays)
- Support in executing strategies and campaigns to support channel partners to target and win large Genotyping opportunities. Facilitate in identifying and exploring the pursuit of large opportunities
- Facilitate early adoption of Illumina’s multi-omics solutions across Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics applications
All listed tasks and responsibilities are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require additional tasks and responsibilities as is reasonable.
Preferred Educational Background:
- M.Sc. or PhD in a Microbiology, Virology, Public Health, Statistical / Population / Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology degree preferred.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
- 5-8 years experience in a related environment
- Experience in at least one of the in the following fields: Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics required
- Fluency in English required
- Prior field experience supporting customers in a highly technical field such as Next Generation Sequencing, Array-based Genotyping, molecular diagnostics or molecular testing preferred
- Use of independent judgement in developing methods, techniques or evaluation criteria for obtaining results
- Excellent time management skills – is able to prioritise workload accordingly
- Familiarity with the competitive landscape and trends in the Infectious Disease Testing, Microbial Genomics, Agrigenomics, and Environmental Genomics markets
- Independently works on highly complex problems requiring analysis of multiple variables
- Excellent demonstrated communication (verbal and written) presentation and training skills
- Strong negotiation skills and the ability to persuade
- Demonstrated proactiveness in initiating and accomplishing tasks
- Proven ability to lead and influence a broad spectrum of constituents (internal stake holders, external shareholders and key opinion leaders in the field) with divergent interests in order to create a defined and focused course of action
- Network of established customer relationships preferred
- Experience in reporting basic financial data
- Ability to travel within district and regionally to carry out primary responsibilities, must be willing to travel up to 50%
- Business experience preferred but not essential
Additional experiences
- Lab–based experience in sequencing library prep methods and sequencing instrumentation preferred
- Experience with DNA microarray technology , molecular diagnostics , genotyping applications is preferred
- Demonstrated superior problem solving and interpersonal skills in a customer facing environment
