Job description: Coordinate and direct the development and implementation of aquatics program including but not limited to swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboard, etc. Supervise senior and junior camp counselors to effect quality programming in the subject area.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years old to comply with New York State Department of Health regulations.
- One year experience as aquatics director or two years? experience as a lifeguard at a children's camp or two seasons of previous experience consisting cumulatively of at least 12 weeks as a children's camp lifeguard, as specified in subdivision (g) of this section, at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or at least 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard, at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time
- Current lifeguard and waterfront Certification as approved by the Local Health Department
- Current CPR for Professional Rescuer certificate or other CPR certification approved by the local Department of Health
- Lifeguard Supervision and Management certificate is required.
- Current or ability to obtain a Basic Swim Instructor Certification
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Ability to supervise and organize staff members.
- Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
- Lifeguard and Progressive Swimming Instructor or Water Safety Instructor certificates are preferred.
- Certification for teaching lifeguarding / First Aid and CPR
- Research and develop educational resources (e.g., goals, lesson plans, skill-building activities, hands-on projects, experiments, etc.) for program staff.
- Prepare final program evaluation reports with future recommendations.
- Plan staff training activities during pre-camp orientation and in-season training.
- Provide highly complex administrative leadership to plan educational programs.
- Provide leadership to ensure that the creation of the Camp's Plan of Work is within the scope of the statewide Plan of Work.
- Oversee the process of interpreting the Peconic Dunes Camp program direction to plan educational programs.
- Lead problem-solving and conflict-resolution processes that effectively address camper and staff concerns, behavioral problems, and personal conflicts.
- Plan the delivery of established positive youth development based on 4-H Essential Elements, the Search Institute, and other research-based information.
- Design community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy
- Direct program staff guidance and communication, including conducting staff meetings, directing staff evaluation processes, implementing performance improvement strategies as needed, and recognizing outstanding performance.
- Direct and implement lifeguard training for CITs.
- Ensure compliance with all camp policies and procedures that protect camper and staff health and safety.
- Ensure program staff maintains high health and safety standards in all program settings and activities.
- Communicate regularly with program staff to proactively identify and address areas of concern regarding health and safety.
- Administer the daily program schedule effectively, balancing activities and daily routines, ensuring adequate staff coverage, and adjusting for weather-related or other exigencies.
- Ensure staff documents critical incidents through CIMRs (Concern, Incident, and Medical Report).
- Manage post-incidents in consultation with the camp director workgroup, including resolution with the camper(s) and staff, incident debriefing, and updating policies and procedures resulting from the incident.
- Manage evaluation processes for staff performance, program and youth development outcomes, and camper satisfaction.
- Regularly observe and evaluate program staff and provide constructive feedback.
- Regularly inspect program space and equipment for safe operation.
- With other Program Directors and Logistics Coordinator, develop daily and weekly educational and recreational activities schedules that offer variety, balance, and challenge.
- Implement waterfront safety guidelines and procedures described in the camp safety plan approved by the Suffolk County Department of Health.
- Conduct camper swimming assessments on Sunday for overnight campers and Monday for day campers.
- Inventory program equipment and supplies and prepare the program area during pre-camp orientation.
- Order program materials through the camp requisition process.
- Complete "Daily Report on Beach Operation" for NYS Department of Health.
- For program staff, prepare educational resources (e.g., goals, lesson plans, skill-building activities, hands-on projects, experiments, etc.).
- Prepare year-end program inventory and supply orders.
- In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
- Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
- Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.
- Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
