Position SummaryThe Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP) provides direct clinical services including mentalhealth assessments, diagnosis, crisis intervention, therapeutic interventions, and counselingservices within community-based mental health and stabilization programs. This role may be filledby a fully licensed LMHP or a license-eligible clinician (such as an LMHP-Resident orLMHP-Supervisee) practicing under approved clinical supervision. Services are delivered ethically,clinically appropriate, and in full compliance with DBHDS and DMAS requirements.Scope of WorkThe LMHP delivers assessment-driven, therapeutic, and stabilization-focused services toindividuals experiencing behavioral health crises. The LMHP may work independently or, whenlicense-eligible, under appropriate clinical supervision. The LMHP may also serve as the leadclinician when working alongside QMHPs, Peer Recovery Specialists, and other support staff,ensuring clinical accuracy, service quality, and regulatory compliance.Core Clinical Responsibilities• Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and diagnostic evaluations.• Formulate and document accurate diagnoses in accordance with clinical standards and scopeof practice.• Provide individual and group therapy sessions based on client needs and programrequirements.• Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation services as clinically indicated.• Develop, implement, and update Individualized Service Plans (ISPs).• Complete risk assessments and safety planning.• Provide therapeutic interventions appropriate to client needs.• Coordinate care and connect individuals to appropriate community resources.• Collaborate with multidisciplinary providers to support continuity of care.Documentation & Compliance Responsibilities• Complete all required clinical documentation accurately and within required timeframes.• Ensure documentation meets DBHDS and DMAS regulatory standards and supervisionrequirements.• Document individual and group therapy services in accordance with billing, supervision, andclinical requirements.• Review client charts for clinical appropriateness, accuracy, and completeness.• Correct documentation errors promptly when identified.• Maintain compliance with ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, and agency policies.Clinical Leadership Responsibilities• Serve as the lead clinician when working with QMHPs, Peer Recovery Specialists, and othersupport staff, as permitted by licensure status.• Ensure clinical services provided by support staff are accurate, ethical, and compliant.• Provide clinical guidance to support accurate assessments, therapy delivery, anddocumentation.• Escalate clinical, supervision, or safety concerns to supervisors or leadership as appropriate.Minimum Qualifications• Active Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP) credential in Virginia OR license-eligiblestatus as an LMHP-Resident, LMHP-Supervisee, or equivalent recognized by theCommonwealth of Virginia.• Master’s degree or higher in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related behavioralhealth field.• Experience providing individual and group therapy, assessments, crisis intervention, andcommunity-based mental health services.• Working knowledge of DBHDS and DMAS regulations applicable to community stabilizationservices.• Ability to practice within scope of licensure and supervision requirements.This document outlines general expectations for the LMHP role within assessment-driven andcommunity stabilization services.
