From educating future leaders to supporting industry research and development, the department emphasizes cutting-edge research, and strong partnerships with industry and communities to advance sustainable bioproducts, bioeconomy, and innovation in paper science and engineering and sustainable biomaterials. It is part of the College of Natural Resources ( CNR ) and is also affiliated with the College of Engineering. The Department’s responsibilities include teaching, research, extension activities, the awarding of undergraduate degrees (Paper Science and Engineering, Sustainable Materials and Technology), and the awarding of graduate degrees (distance Master’s, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Forest Biomaterials).About The College Of Natural ResourcesThe College of Natural Resources ( CNR ) at NC State has a long tradition of excellence in teaching, research, extension, and outreach. - Teach two core classes annually in the Sustainable Materials and Technology program.
- Advise and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, supporting their career success.
- Publish research articles in peer-reviewed journals and produce other scholarly products.
- Develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in areas such as:
- Sustainable bioproducts and advanced manufacturing
- Packaging materials and products
- AI applications in manufacturing and bioproducts
- The sustainable bioeconomy utilizing emerging materials and technologies
- Ability to teach in the SWST Accredited Sustainable Materials and Technology program at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
- Strong record of teaching and research in biomaterials manufacturing, composites, value-added fiber products, sustainable packaging materials and technologies, and AI applications.
- Demonstrated leadership and commitment to academic excellence, student success, and professional development for undergraduate and graduate students through mentoring.
- Ability to attract research funding from federal agencies, industrial partners, and other sources.
- Robust record of publishing impactful research in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including wood products and packaging industries.
- Enthusiasm for leading and promoting the Sustainable Materials and Technology program and developing a sustainable packaging undergraduate program.
- Ability to play a catalytic role in building the research and engagement portfolio of the Department of Forest Biomaterials, as evidenced by a track record of team research as both participant and leader.
- A talent for, and evidence of working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, university administration, and other constituent groups and partners both within and outside the university.
- Demonstrated success in scholarship, publications, and securing grant funding for fundamental or applied research in emerging bioproducts and other forest biomaterials development and manufacturing, packaging materials, or construction materials.
