Job description: The Department of Performing and Media Arts is housed withing the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts. Its walls encompass all the elements needed for teaching and performance in theatre, film, and media and dance: four performance spaces; dance and theatre rehearsal studios; a sound stage; scenery, costume and prop shops; sound and lighting design studios; and film editing and production suites. The Schwartz Center serves as a catalyst for the creative and intellectual endeavors of the many talented students, faculty, and staff at Cornell.
The department leads students from all disciplines through artistic and scholarly explorations of live and mediated forms of creativity and expression. Students are challenged to think creatively, critically, and historically about the world around them as they identify and interpret the power of image, sound, gesture, and movement and cultivate their own artistic and academic voices.

The Production Stage Manager supports a range of productions, events, and teaching in the Department of Performing and Media Arts. Working in close collaboration with faculty, staff and students, this position manages multiple theatre, dance, film, and mediated productions per year, from fully resourced work to smaller workshopped productions. For fully resourced productions, the Production Stage Manager is responsible for the entire production, including planning, organizing, disseminating information and troubleshooting. During rehearsal and show periods, the SM plays a key role by maintaining daily contact, usually in person, with the production director, designers, actors, and other essential personnel to assure a successful production/event. For these and other-scaled productions, which include both live and mediated work, responsibilities vary but include the teaching, training, and supervising of students in the methodologies of stage management and production management consistent with the curricular, intellectual, and artistic goals of the Department. This is done through mentoring and directing students in hands-on experiences and in the proper methods of creatively mounting productions.
This position assists the Production Manager in the general management of the programming of the department, which includes live, mediated, filmed, and installation work. In conjunction with the Production Manager this position manages ticketing for the department, including hiring and training of box office and house manager student employees. The Production Stage Manager also assists in organizing other departmental events and may occasionally guest lecture in department courses.
Work schedule routinely requires night and weekend attendance at rehearsals and shows and occasionally follows a standard work week but may vary depending on operational needs and productions. This is a regular, full-time recurring nine-month appointment (mid-August through mid-May) paid over 12 months, with a pro-rated salary.
Required Qualifications:
- Master?s degree, preferably in Theatrical Stage Management, or equivalent professional experience required. Three to five years? experience as a stage manager: at least one season as a stage manager, an assistant stage manager, or production assistant in a professional theatre. Must possess effective organization and communication skills and be able to work with artists, technicians, and students with tact and diplomacy.
