Technical Writer (Government Contract) – Job Description Position Summary The Technical Writer will support federal government programs by developing, editing, and maintaining high-quality technical documentation, reports, and communication materials. This role collaborates with program managers, engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and stakeholders to translate complex technical and operational information into clear, accurate, and compliant documentation aligned with government standards and contract requirements. The Technical Writer ensures all documentation supports program deliverables, complies with federal guidelines, and facilitates effective communication across technical and non-technical audiences.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Documentation Development

  • Develop, write, and maintain technical documentation including system documentation, user guides, SOPs, training materials, and operational manuals.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise documentation suitable for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Create and update documentation supporting system architecture, software development, cybersecurity, and infrastructure initiatives.

Government DeliverablesCompliance

  • Prepare contract deliverables including technical reports, white papers, program documentation, and status reports in accordance with federal contract requirements.
  • Ensure documentation complies with federal standards, agency policies, and contract deliverable timelines.
  • Support proposal development, documentation review cycles, and quality assurance processes.

CollaborationKnowledge Management

  • Work closely with subject matter experts, engineers, program managers, and analysts to gather technical information.
  • Facilitate documentation reviews and incorporate feedback from government stakeholders and internal teams.
  • Maintain document repositories, version control systems, and knowledge management systems.

EditingQuality Assurance

  • Review and edit technical documentation to ensure clarity, accuracy, grammar, formatting, and compliance with documentation standards.
  • Standardize documentation templates and style guidelines across program documentation.
  • Ensure documentation consistency and alignment with agency documentation frameworks.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 3–7+ years of technical writing experience supporting federal government programs or government contractors.
  • Experience producing documentation for IT systems, software development, cybersecurity, or data platforms.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Experience with documentation tools such as SharePoint, Confluence, or knowledge management platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple documentation deliverables in a fast-paced government contracting environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal agencies (e.g., DHS, DOE, DoD, HHS, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Agile, DevOps, or software development lifecycle documentation.
  • Experience supporting proposal writing or technical proposal development.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards such as Section 508 compliance.
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git or document management systems.

Security Clearance

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Secret security clearance (depending on contract requirements).

Core Competencies Technical Communication

  • Ability to translate complex technical information into user-friendly documentation
  • Strong editing, formatting, and documentation structure skills
  • Development of technical manuals, SOPs, and training guides

Government DocumentationCompliance

  • Understanding of federal documentation standards and deliverables
  • Experience preparing contract documentation and reports
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance frameworks

  • Effective collaboration with SMEs, engineers, and program leadership
