The Role: Senior Gear Engineer

As a Senior Gear Engineer at arenaflex, you'll play a crucial role in supporting our development teams across all disciplines. Your work will multiply our collective efforts, enhance team performance, and help us maintain the high standard of quality that our players expect. This position requires a unique blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a passion for empowering others through well-designed tools and processes.

You'll work closely with our art, design, and engineering teams to identify workflow inefficiencies, pain points, and challenges in our development process. Through collaboration, you'll generate potential solutions, weigh tradeoffs given project constraints and development timelines, implement the selected solution, and support team adoption. Additionally, you'll be responsible for assisting in the development, enhancement, and maintenance of arenaflex's existing engine-specific and custom toolset.

Key Responsibilities

• Process Optimization: Proactively identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement in our development process across multiple disciplines, from art creation to final engineering implementation.
• Tool Maintenance & Development: Maintain, extend, and support our existing development tools, ensuring they evolve to meet changing project requirements and technological advancements.
• Custom Asset Pipelines: Design, build, and guide custom asset pipelines that streamline our content creation and integration processes.
• Technology Enhancement: Grow arenaflex's proprietary libraries, tools, and technologies across various game engines and platforms, adapting to new technologies as they emerge.
• Collaboration & Communication: Work effectively with cross-functional teams to understand needs, gather requirements, and implement solutions that enhance productivity and quality.
• Research & Innovation: Stay current with industry trends in game development tools and technologies, bringing new ideas and approaches to enhance our capabilities.

Required Qualifications

• A strong passion for empowering others to do their best work through well-designed tools and processes.
• Enthusiasm for the complete tool lifecycle: identifying problems, evaluating potential solutions, implementing tools, and measuring their effectiveness.
• Experience working with custom standalone tools and systems tailored for game development.
• Enjoyment of developing tools that serve multiple game development disciplines, from programming to art production.
• Proficiency in C#, C++, and Python, with a strong understanding of software architecture and design patterns.
• Ability to work effectively in a self-directed environment, managing multiple projects and priorities.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex systems and identify areas for improvement.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical team members.
• A portfolio demonstrating past tool development work and its impact on team productivity.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with custom game engines beyond commercial offerings.
• Proficiency with Unreal or Unity engines, with experience in extending their capabilities.
• Familiarity with JavaScript and web technologies for creating browser-based tools and interfaces.
• Experience with version control systems and collaborative development workflows.
• Knowledge of asset management systems and workflow optimization.
• Understanding of performance profiling and optimization techniques for game development tools.
• Familiarity with continuous integration and deployment practices in a game development context.
