You will work with a cross functional and global team to develop new tools, processes, and drive lab proficiency by utilizing machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, Gen AI, data pipelines and/or 3M digital technologies.The ideal candidate will design data capture systems with storage in a cloud-based platforms, and apply AI to said data (RAG, LLM, ML, DL) for retrieval and modeling supporting product development, process development, and horizontal use cases.As an AI/Machine Learning Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. - Architecting and implementing Agentic AI and Large Language Model (LLM) systems to address horizontal use cases within the Advanced Materials & Transportation laboratory
- Apply augmented generation algorithms (RAG, CAG, and more) to optimize internal documentation access and utilization
- Design, development, and deployment of comprehensive data capture pipelines and foundational data infrastructure
- Constructing and maintaining robust machine learning models and analytical tools to enhance product and application development initiatives
- Staying up to date with the latest software updates and requirements, whether from third-party providers or from internal organizations
- Collaborating seamlessly with IT, corporate labs, other 3M division, and external partners as needed to accomplish your objectives
- Staying up to date on new technologies and trends within digital science with a focus on AI
- Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science, Software Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline
- Three (3) years of Data Engineering/Data Science in a private, public, government or military environment
- Training and/or experience in deep learning, machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, statistics, informatics, VAEs, transformers, diffusion models, optimization algorithms and/or applied mathematics through thesis work, or industry or national lab employment
- Fluent in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C, C++, Java, and/or R)
- Proficiency in implementing and managing data capture systems, conducting advanced data analysis, and integrating solutions with artificial intelligence, machine learning platforms, Large Language Models (LLMs), and Agentic AI architectures
- Knowledge of AWS or Azure or GCP or cloud ecosystems, including associated data analytics tools and service implementation (AWS: Bedrock, SageMaker, S3, EC2, Lambda)
- Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity in early-stage opportunity assessment, with proven adaptability to pivot strategies as new information emerges
- Experience applying machine learning methodologies within physics or chemistry domains, particularly in scientific machine learning applications
- Familiarity with database management (structured or unstructured), including SQL-style databases, data lakes for efficient data storage and retrieval
- Ph.D. degree or post-doctoral fellowship in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science, Software Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline from an accredited university
