Herndon Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a well-rounded, experienced recreation professional to plan, recruit staff and develop programs and events. You will oversee instructional recreation classes, such as martial arts, wellness and gymnastics/cheer, teen travel camp, and community events, including arts and crafts shows and July 4th festivities. You must demonstrate your ability to work well with community and volunteer organizations. This position includes budgeting, hiring and supervising seasonal staff, managing assigned programs and details, purchasing, volunteer management, evaluation, and more. In this position, you will support the Town of Herndon by:

• Developing and delivering classes, activities, community and family events, recreational and out of school programs.
• Improving existing programs and developing diverse new activities.
• Work with the team and independently to achieve division and parks and recreation department goals.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• Bachelor's degree in recreation or closely related field is highly desired.
• 3 years of experience in parks and recreation environment.
• CPR and first aid certification is desired.
• Broad knowledge of and experience in developing recreation programs
• Enthusiasm for the hard prep work that results in smiling participants
• Characteristics of public servanthood and an understanding of local government operations
• The ability to successfully lead groups of various scope and size
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including proficiency with Word and Excel for the purpose of developing various statistical and financial reports, and values computations.
• A vision of excellence and a desire to be self-motivated
• The ability to give and receive feedback
• A strong interest in the mission of the department
• An aptitude for organization and a willingness to master new systems, especially as it relates to financial tracking, reporting, and applicable software

Work Location: 814 Ferndale Ave, Herndon, VA 20170; Herndon Community Center Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town.
