Key Responsibilities

As a Teaching Assistant MEC, you will be responsible for providing instructional services to students with emotional and learning disabilities under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher. Your duties will include:

  • Supporting students to ensure a safe, orderly environment that is conducive to teaching and learning
  • Implementing specialized instruction to students with emotional and learning disabilities
  • Collaborating with colleagues and assisting teachers to meet student learning needs
  • Communicating regularly and effectively with stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and other support staff
  • Assisting students with daily living skills, such as dressing, toileting, feeding, and other activities as applicable
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of student progress and behavior
  • Attending staff meetings and trainings to stay current on best practices and policies
  • Promoting equity and culturally responsive practices to create inclusive environments

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., special education, psychology, or a related field) preferred
  • Experience working with students with emotional and learning disabilities, preferably in a school setting
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other support staff
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and stand for extended periods, with frequent walking and bending

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Certification in special education or a related field (e.g., special education teacher certification, behavior specialist certification)
  • Experience working with students with autism, emotional and/or developmental disabilities
  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques
  • Familiarity with inclusive education practices and culturally responsive teaching methods
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students and families from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds
