Experienced Part-Time Online ESOL Instructor – Culturally Responsive Education for Immigrant and Refugee Communities

Remote Full-time Live

About Us

The Arab-American Family Support Center (AAFSC) is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization established in 1994 to provide culturally and linguistically competent, trauma-informed social services to immigrant and refugee communities. Our mission is to empower individuals with the tools they need to successfully acclimate to the world around them and become active participants in their communities. With 36 languages represented across staff, AAFSC has developed cultural and linguistic expertise serving members of NYC's Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, Muslim, and South Asian (AMENAMSA) immigrant and refugee communities.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Part-Time Online ESOL Instructor to join our Readiness Initiatives Program. The successful candidate will provide contextualized instruction to limited English proficient adults, giving them the civic and English language skills to effectively participate in the English-speaking environment in which they live. The instructor will foster a classroom environment that offers participants the resources, opportunities, and support needed to help them grow and achieve self-sufficiency.

About the Role

As an ESOL Instructor at AAFSC, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing instruction and facilitating classroom activities in line with stated class objectives.
  • Preparing students to take the Citizenship test and pass the interview.
  • Building instructional activities around the four interdependent components of reading: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Providing a variety of instructional deliveries, including individualized instruction, small group instruction, and whole class instruction.
  • Facilitating learning with textbooks, workbooks, lectures, computer-based educational programs, audio/visual aids, hands-on activities, and use of tutors.
  • Assisting students with the development of digital literacy skills and providing learning activities designed to enhance financial literacy skills.
  • Maintaining accurate student attendance records.
  • Ensuring all lessons and structured activities have clearly defined outcomes with measurable skill gains and/or learning goals for adult participants.
  • Maintaining an active repository of curricula that is made accessible and available on organizational servers.
  • Collaborating with the Program Director and Associate Director to continuously evaluate and refine curricula and activity plans to ensure success for adult learners attending the program.
  • Ensuring all paperwork and documentation is completed in a timely manner.
  • Reporting any issues in the classroom (either with students or volunteers) immediately to the supervisor.

About You

We are looking for an experienced, creative, hard-working, and dynamic ESOL instructor who has experience creating student-centered learning environments, using a communicative approach, and incorporating civic engagement, job readiness, and technology in the classroom. A commitment to immigrant, refugee, and low-income communities is essential for this role.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills; strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with teaching multi-levels in a single classroom.
  • Flexible with an open enrollment schedule.
  • Openness to learning about the languages, cultures, and customs of the students to better serve them.
  • Must complete 18 hours of professional development training each year.
  • Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development, and implementation of structured programming for adult learners required.
  • Open to learning more about cultural responsiveness, trauma-informed education, and language instruction.
  • Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Passion for AAFSC's mission and vision.
  • Job contingent on pre-employment background check and fingerprint clearance.
  • U.S. Work Authorization required.
